Bakke-yaki Pottery Kiln Hirogama

Bakke-yaki is a special pottery tradition from the 5th lord of the Date samurai clan of Watari dating back 300 years to the Edo period, originally for making tea utensils. The only pottery kiln in Watari, built in 1985, was wiped out by the 2011 tsunami. A new large kiln was built in 2013 to revive the tradition and the unique esthetic of this type of pottery. Groups of two or more may try their hand at making pottery (reservations required).
