Shomyoji Temple

This temple was built after Komeiin Temple, which was built by Takeishi Munetane (who later changed his surname to Watari), a descendant of Chiba Tsunetane who worked for Minamoto no Yoritomo, relocated to Wakuya Town in the Sengoku period. A sculpture of the Amida Nyorai Buddha (also called the Black Buddha; a Designated Cultural Property of Miyagi Prefecture) that was supposedly given by Yoritomo and worshipped at Komeiin Temple is also housed here. A chinkapin tree that is over 700 years old (a Designated National Natural Monument) and a Japanese chinkapin tree that is over 300 years old (a Designated Cultural Property of Miyagi Prefecture) can also be found within the temple grounds.
