Watari Shrine

The people of Watari built this shrine in 1879 on the site where the Watari-Date clan’s castle used to stand to honor the virtuous deeds of Date Shigezane for future generations. A large stone monument carved with Shigezane’s biography stands next to the shrine. Togther with many of their retainers, the Watari-Date clan relocated to Hokkaido in 1868, the first year of the Meiji era, and built the foundations for what is currently Date city in Hokkaido.
